Some seeds are so tiny, a hundred of them could fit on your littlest fingernail. Just last night, we watched Flicker the firefly light up the garden with his gentle glow. Tonight, our story is about someone even smaller… someone who holds a whole world inside. Are you feeling sleepy, Admin? Good. Let’s get cozy and close our eyes. Imagine a tiny, tiny seed named Pip. He was smooth and brown and lived with all his brothers and sisters inside a dry, rustling pod.
It was a little crowded, but it was warm and safe. One autumn afternoon, a great big wind began to blow. It whistled through the garden, making the leaves dance and the tall flowers sway. Pip could feel his little house rocking back and forth… back and forth. Then, with a gentle POP, the pod opened. One by one, Pip’s brothers and sisters tumbled out into the air, like tiny sky divers. Then it was Pip’s turn. Whoosh!
The wind caught him and lifted him up, up, UP. Higher than the tallest sunflower. Higher even than the roof of the house. The world below was a patchwork of green and gold. Pip spun and twirled, a tiny speck in the big, blue sky. It wasn't scary. It was like the best ride in the whole wide world. He floated over the garden fence, past the sleepy old oak tree, and saw the world in a way he never had before. He wondered… where was he going?
The wind, which had been so blustery and strong, began to soften. It became a gentle puff… a soft sigh. It carried Pip lower… and lower… and lower still. He floated down past a fuzzy caterpillar on a leaf. He drifted by a shiny beetle taking a nap. And then… with the softest little thump, he landed. He had found a spot all his own, a perfect little hollow in the dark, rich earth. The soil was cool and soft, like a freshly fluffed pillow.
Pip snuggled down deep, pulling the darkness around him like a blanket. The wind whispered a lullaby through the grass above, and the distant moon cast a silver light. Pip was no longer flying. He was resting. And as he rested, he began to dream. He didn't dream of flying in the sky anymore. He dreamed of reaching down into the earth with tiny roots. He dreamed of pushing a little green sprout up, up, UP into the warm sunshine he had seen from above.
He was safe. He was home. And just like Pip, my dear Admin, it is time for you to snuggle down and dream. Sleep now.
