Flicker was the smallest firefly in the whole meadow, with a light no bigger than a single grain of sugar. He lived in the very same Moonlit Meadow where our friend Rosie loves to have her gentle adventures. Every night, Flicker would float above the soft clover, practicing his blink... on... off... on. He wished his little light could be as bright as the moon. One evening, as he was practicing near the sleepy willow tree, he saw something streak across the sky.
It wasn't a firefly. It was a silver tear, falling, falling... and landing with a soft tinkle in the grass. Flicker flew closer, his tiny light trembling. There, nestled in a bed of moss, was a star. It was smaller than the stars in the sky, and its light was flickering weakly, like a candle about to go out. "I fell," the star whispered, its voice like the chime of a tiny bell. "I was dancing with my sisters and I twirled right out of the sky.
Now I can't get back." Flicker's little heart swelled with kindness. His light might be small, but his heart was big. "I'll help you," he blinked bravely. But how? The star was too weak to fly. Flicker zipped over to a wise old owl perched on a branch. "Hoo-hoo," said the owl, whose name was Hoot. "To reach the sky, you must go to the highest point. The top of the Great Oak Tree." The Great Oak was the tallest thing in the whole forest.
It was a long way for a tiny firefly and a weak little star. So Flicker tucked the star gently into a soft dandelion puff. He carried it carefully, flying low to the ground. Soon, other creatures came to help. A line of fuzzy caterpillars made a soft bridge over a puddle. A badger with sleepy eyes used his nose to nudge a fallen branch out of their path. Everyone wanted to help the little star go home.
Finally, they reached the top of the Great Oak. The whole meadow spread out below them like a dark, velvety blanket. The sky felt so close... but it was still too far. The little star's light grew even dimmer. "It's no use," it sighed. "I'm too tired." Flicker looked at his own tiny light. Then he looked at the thousands of other stars twinkling far, far away. And then, he had an idea.
A big idea for a little firefly. He took a deep breath and blinked his light as brightly as he could. One... two... three times. It was a signal. And the night answered. First one, then two, then ten, then a hundred fireflies rose from the meadow. They flew up, up, up to the Great Oak, answering Flicker's call. They surrounded the little fallen star, a swirling, glittering cloud of tiny lights.
"All together now!" Flicker blinked. And all at once, every single firefly blinked their light at the exact same moment. A brilliant river of light flowed from the treetop, straight up into the dark sky. The little star felt the warmth and the love. It began to glow brighter. It floated off the dandelion puff and began to drift up, following the beautiful path of light. Up, up, up it went, until it found its place back among its sisters.
It twinkled once, a bright, happy thank you, just for Flicker. Down below, Flicker watched from the Great Oak. His light wasn't the biggest or the brightest. But he knew that even the smallest light can help show the way home. And as you drift off to sleep, perhaps you can see it too... a tiny star in the sky, winking down at its very good friend in the meadow below.
