A hedgehog can curl into a tight ball, protecting itself with over five thousand sharp spines. Last night, we watched Flicker the firefly make his own special glow. Tonight, another small friend will find a different kind of magic, one that was waiting for him all along. His name was Huddle, and he was a very small, very gentle hedgehog. His home was a cozy burrow tucked beneath the roots of an old oak tree, lined with soft moss and dry leaves.
One night, when the moon was a perfect silver circle in the sky, Huddle poked his little black nose out of his doorway. The air was cool and smelled of damp earth and sweet night-blossoms. Everything was quiet. So quiet. But then, he saw it. On a single, broad clover leaf, a tiny drop of water shimmered. It wasn't just water. Huddle crept closer, his little feet making no sound on the moss. Inside the dewdrop, a tiny star seemed to be swimming.
It swirled with soft, silver light, a perfect little piece of the night sky. Huddle had never seen anything like it. It was magic. Then, just beyond the clover, he saw another. And another. A trail of shimmering dewdrops, each one holding its own tiny captured star, led away from his burrow and into the deep, quiet woods. Huddle felt a gentle pull, a quiet curiosity that whispered… follow. So he did.
He waddled softly, his quills brushing against ferns that glistened with the same magical light. An owl hooted softly from a high branch, as if to say, “go on, little one.” A gentle breeze rustled the leaves, making a sound like a soft sigh. The trail of starry dewdrops led him somewhere he had never been before. It was a small, hidden clearing. And in the center of the clearing was a little pond, as round and smooth as a dark mirror.
The dewdrops led right to its edge. Huddle looked up at the sky, and then down at the water. The pond wasn't dark at all. It was holding the entire night sky. The moon, the stars, all the constellations… they were all floating peacefully on its still surface. Huddle understood. The dewdrops weren’t just magic drops. They were tiny sips of water that had tasted the starlight from the pond. They were carrying the pond's quiet magic out into the forest for everyone to share.
Huddle sat at the water’s edge, his little heart full of a warm, peaceful feeling. He wasn’t a separate, small hedgehog in a big, dark world. He was part of the quiet, shimmering night. And as he watched the stars float on the water, he knew the night was not something to be afraid of, but a soft, gentle blanket, full of quiet wonder.
