The moon was a perfect, silver button sewn onto the big, velvet coat of the night sky. That very same moon had just finished watching Barnaby the Squirrel's own moonlit surprise. Now, its silvery light was pouring down into a quiet meadow, where a little rabbit named Rosie was supposed to be asleep. Rosie’s nose twitched. Her ears, soft as dandelion fluff, swiveled this way and that. It was too beautiful a night to just close your eyes.
The air was cool and smelled of sweet clover and damp earth. All the other bunnies were snug in their burrows. But Rosie was a wanderer. And a wonderer. Tonight, she wondered about a tiny light she’d never seen before. It wasn’t a star. It was too low for that. It wasn’t a firefly. It didn’t blink and zip away. This light was different. It stayed in one place, near the old willow tree, and it pulsed. Softly.
Gently. A little heartbeat of light in the darkness. Rosie’s curiosity wiggled right down to the tips of her toes. She took a tiny hop. Then another. Her little powder-puff tail bobbed behind her as she crept across the dew-kissed grass. The world was hushed, listening. The only sound was the soft thump-thump of her own heart and the whisper of the breeze in the willow leaves. What could it be? A fallen piece of the moon?
A lost star that needed help? She peeked around a clump of soft moss at the base of the willow. And there it was. It wasn't a star at all. It was a flower. A single, perfect bell-shaped flower, with petals that looked like they were spun from moonlight itself. And from the heart of the flower came the glow. A warm, gentle, golden light that pulsed in time with the quiet night. Rosie sat on her haunches, mesmerized.
She had never seen anything so lovely. The flower didn't make a sound, but she felt like it was humming a lullaby just for her. The light seemed to wrap around her like a soft, warm blanket. Her ears began to droop. Her nose stopped twitching. The gentle pulse of the light was sooooo calming. It was the coziest light in the whole wide world. Rosie gave a big, bunny yawn. She found a soft patch of clover right there, curled herself into a little ball, and closed her eyes.
The magical flower kept watch, bathing her in its gentle glow. And as Rosie drifted off to sleep, she dreamed of a world painted in soft, golden light. Up above, the silver-button moon smiled down on the little rabbit, sleeping peacefully next to her secret, glowing friend.
