Leap the Little Frog’s Moonlit Pond Adventure

Leap the little frog counted seven stars twinkling in the dark water of the pond. Just last night, we heard Flicker the firefly painting the darkness with his gentle light. Tonight, a big, creamy moon made the whole pond glow, and Leap felt a little wiggle of adventure in his toes. He had heard a whisper from the wind in the reeds... a story about the most beautiful lily pad in the entire pond.

A lily pad made just for moon-gazing. And Leap decided he was going to find it. With a soft ‘plip,’ he hopped from his home pad. He was on a quest. The first lily pad he came to had a single, perfect pearl of dew sitting right in its center. It shimmered like a tiny diamond. "Oh, this is beautiful," Leap whispered. "But... is it the most beautiful?" He decided to keep looking.

He hopped again. The next lily pad was shaped just like a heart. A sleepy ladybug was already curled up on one edge, her red shell like a tiny jewel. Leap smiled. It was very sweet. But his heart told him his adventure wasn't over yet. He took another gentle leap. He hopped past a big, strong lily pad where his friends were singing a quiet goodnight song.

He hopped past a small, shy one hiding under a willow branch. Each one was lovely in its own way. But none of them felt... just right. He was starting to feel a little tired. His hops became a little smaller. What if he couldn't find it? What if there was no special lily pad after all? He landed with a soft sigh on a very plain, very ordinary lily pad.

It wasn't the biggest, or the greenest. It had no dewdrops or sleeping ladybugs. He was just going to rest for a moment. But then… he looked up. From this one simple spot, he could see everything. The moon looked like a giant scoop of vanilla ice cream, right in the middle of the sky. He could see the silver ripples spreading across the entire pond.

He could hear the gentle ‘crick-crick’ of the crickets on the bank. He even saw a tiny, familiar light blinking near the shore. It was Flicker, saying goodnight. Leap didn't hop again. He snuggled his chin down onto the cool, smooth leaf. This ordinary lily pad wasn't beautiful because of what it was. It was beautiful because of what it let him see.

It was the coziest, quietest, most peaceful place in the world. He had been looking for a thing, but what he really found was a feeling. And in the soft moonlight, the little frog on his simple green lily pad was the coziest creature in the whole, wide, sleeping world.
