There are seven bright stars in the little spoon shape called the Little Dipper. Those same stars were twinkling over Leap the little frog’s moonlit pond just last night. Tonight, they are peeking into the cozy home of someone new. Her name is Rosie the Hedgehog. Rosie was curled up in her nest of soft moss and fallen leaves, tucked beside a garden wall.

She wiggled her little black nose, and one eye popped open. Then the other. Through the entrance of her leafy home, she could see them—tiny, glittering diamonds scattered across a dark velvet blanket. The stars were awake. And so was Rosie. A little rumble started in her tummy. It wasn't a big, hungry rumble. It was a small, hopeful rumble.

A rumble that wished for something sweet. Not a crunchy beetle. Not a wiggly worm. Tonight, her heart wanted a berry. A special, moonlight-sweetened berry. So the quest began. Rosie pushed her way out of her nest. Her tiny feet made almost no sound on the cool, damp earth. Pitter-patter-pitter-patter, a secret little rhythm in the quiet night.

The garden was a land of giants after dark. Tall flowers looked like towers, and the big, round cabbages were like green castles sleeping in the moonlight. A big oak leaf rustled right next to her, and she froze, a perfect little ball of spines. But it was only the night breeze, whispering secrets to the trees. Silly breeze.

She followed the stone path, her nose twitching, sampling all the night-time smells. Damp soil. Freshly cut grass. And then… something else. Something wonderful. It was a sweet, sugary perfume she had never smelled in this part of the garden before. It wasn’t the raspberries from the big bush—she knew that smell well. This was new.

This was a mystery. The scent seemed to pull her along on an invisible string, leading her past the grumpy gnome statue and behind the old stone birdbath. And there, hiding in a patch of clover, she found it. A tiny, wild strawberry plant. It held just three berries. They weren't big, but in the silvery moonlight, they glowed like tiny red jewels.

Rosie crept closer. She took a gentle bite of the first one. Oh! It was pure magic. It tasted like sunshine and honey and summer rain all at once. It was the sweetest, most perfect berry in the whole wide world. She ate the other two, savoring each little bite until her tummy’s hopeful rumble turned into a happy, contented purr.

With the sweet taste still on her tongue, she pattered all the way back to her nest. She pushed through her leafy door and curled up in her warm, mossy bed. The stars kept twinkling. The moon kept watch. And Rosie the Hedgehog, safe and snug in her home, fell fast asleep, dreaming of starlight and sweet, secret strawberries.
