Are you ready for a story? Good. Let’s get settled in. A firefly's light is called a 'cold light' because it creates almost no heat at all. It’s a bit like the gentle glow our friend Luna the Moonbeam brought down to Earth last night… a light made of pure wonder. Tonight’s story is about a light like that. A brand new one. Our story begins in a garden, just as the day was sighing and melting into evening. The air grew cool and smelled of damp earth and sweet night-blooming jasmine.
Tucked beneath a wide, green leaf, a tiny creature was waking up for the very first time. Her name was Lumi. She felt a strange little tickle deep inside her. It wasn't a hungry tickle, or a sleepy tickle. It was… a fizzy, bubbly sort of feeling. And then— blink. A tiny speck of light appeared at the very tip of her tail. It was soft, and green-gold, and it surprised her so much that she blinked it right out again. Hmm. She tried again. She thought about the fizzy feeling, and— blink.
There it was. Her very own light. But oh, it was so very small. Lumi peeked out from under her leaf. High above, the moon was a great, steady lamp. Down below, a cluster of mushrooms gave off a strange, cool, blueish glow. Their light was constant… and BIG. Lumi looked back at her own tiny, flickering light. She felt very small, and very new. So she tucked her light away and just watched the world from the shadows. She drifted out from her leaf, flying low and quiet through the giant forest of grass stems.
She felt a little lonely. What good was one tiny, wobbly light in a world with a whole moon? Just then, she heard a tiny, worried rustle near a pebble. It was a little june beetle, looking very lost. “I can’t find the path,” the beetle whispered to itself. “It’s too dark down here to see the way home.” Lumi froze. She watched the beetle bump into a blade of grass and turn around in a circle. Her light was small, yes. It wasn’t big and grand like the moon. But… the beetle was small, too.
And the path it needed to see was also very, very small. Maybe… maybe a small light was EXACTLY what was needed. Lumi took a little breath. She let the fizzy feeling grow. And this time, she didn't just blink her light on and off. She let it shine. It wasn’t a flicker anymore. It was a steady, warm, golden glow. She floated down right beside the lost beetle. Her light spilled over the ground, showing a perfect little path between the blades of grass, leading right to a cozy burrow under a root.
“Oh!” gasped the little beetle. “A light! A perfect little light! Thank you!” And it happily scurried down the path and disappeared into its home. A warmth spread through Lumi that had nothing to do with her light. It was joy. She had helped. Her little light had been just enough. She flew up, up, up, out of the tall grass. And as she rose into the twilight air, her light pulsed with a happy, confident rhythm. Blink. Blink. Blink. And then… from across the garden… another light answered her.
Blink. Blink. Blink. And another! And another! Soon the whole garden was filled with tiny, dancing stars, all calling to her. They were her family. Lumi flew to join them, her own light finding its place in the beautiful, swirling river of gold. She was no longer a shy, hidden flicker. She was a part of the magic, making the dark a little brighter, and the world a little more wonderful. A perfect little light, in a perfect little sky, right where she belonged.
