The softest light in the garden doesn't come from the moon. It comes from the tiny lamp of a single glow-worm. It reminds me of the quiet magic we found with Barnaby in his moonlit teacup, doesn't it, Admin? Well, tonight’s story is about another kind of light, and a very tiny hero. A little moth named Luna fluttered through the cool night air. Her wings were the color of dust and dreams, and she was on a very important mission. Her best friend, a little dewdrop named Flicker, was getting sleepy. And Luna had promised him the most wonderful blanket in the WHOLE world.
She needed to find the softest, most shimmering silk. First, she found a spider’s web, stretched between two rose thorns. It glittered with a thousand tiny moon-jewels. But when she touched it with her antenna, it was sticky and strong. Oh, no. That was much too tough for a blanket. So she flew on, her little moth heart hoping. Under a large fern, she found an old cocoon, left behind by a butterfly. The silk was pearly and pale. Luna nudged it gently. It was soft, yes… but it felt a little bit dusty. It held the memory of being a home, not a blanket.
It wasn't quite right. Then, she saw a line of silk a caterpillar had left on a big green leaf. It was smooth and white. But it felt… a little bit plain. Not quite shimmery enough for a friend as special as Flicker. Luna sighed a tiny moth-sigh. The garden was so big, and the perfect thread was so hard to find. Flicker was waiting, shivering just a little on his blade of grass. She had to find SOMETHING. Feeling a little tired, Luna landed on the petal of a large, white moonflower. She rested her wings.
The moonlight poured down all around her. It washed over the flower, making the petal glow. And as she watched, she saw it. The moonlight wasn't just light. Where it touched the flower, it looked like… like liquid silk. It pooled and shimmered, softer than anything she had ever imagined. It was PERFECT. Luna knew just what to do. She began to dance in the air, just above the flower. It was a special, quiet dance that only moths know. With gentle beats of her wings, she guided the moonbeams. She dipped and swooped, catching the light on the tips of her wings and weaving it together.
The thread of light was warm in a way she couldn't explain. It didn't feel hot, but it felt like… comfort. Like a hug. She carefully gathered the finished light-blanket and flew back to her friend. Flicker was just a tiny, trembling sphere on his blade of grass. I'm back, she whispered. She draped the moonlight over him. He instantly stopped shivering. The blanket of light settled around him, making him sparkle like a tiny, captured star. He snuggled in, warm and cozy under his blanket of pure light, and drifted off to sleep with a happy little glimmer.
Luna smiled, settling on the grass beside him. The best blankets, she realized, aren't woven from thread at all. They're woven from friendship… and a little bit of moonlight. Goodnight, Admin. Sleep well.
