Barnaby was a small, shiny button with four perfect holes. He had just popped off a little blue coat, Admin, a coat the color of the sky right after sunset… just like the one we remember Luna the Moth loved to fly in. Now, he lay all alone on the cool, smooth wooden floor. From down here, the whole world looked different. A tiny piece of lint looked like a fluffy, grey sheep. A long sunbeam stretched across the floorboards, a warm and golden road leading to faraway places.
But Barnaby didn't want to go to faraway places. He wanted to be home. His coat felt so very far away. He missed being nestled in the soft fabric, feeling the gentle rhythm of your breathing as you wore it. Suddenly, he felt a tiny wobble in the floor. Whoosh! A little toy car with bright red wheels zoomed past, missing him by just a whisker. Oh, that was close. Then, a soft, fuzzy shape drifted near. It was a dust bunny, with gentle, wispy arms and sleepy eyes. "Are you lost?" the dust bunny whispered, its voice like rustling leaves.
Barnaby couldn't speak, but he wiggled a little, which meant yes. "Don't you worry," the dust bunny hummed. "Adventures are just stories happening for the first time." The dust bunny nudged him gently. "Let's roll," it said. And together, they began a slow, careful journey across the great, wide floor. They rolled past the leg of a chair, which felt like a giant tree trunk in a quiet forest. They saw a green crayon lying on its side, a waxy rainbow bridge to nowhere. It was all very interesting, but it wasn't home.
Just as Barnaby was starting to feel very tired and very small, a huge, soft shadow fell over them. It was warm. It was fuzzy. It wasn't a shadow at all… it was a slipper. A big, cozy slipper, shuffling softly across the floor. The slipper stopped right beside him. And then a kind, gentle hand reached down, down, down. "Oh, there you are!" a soft voice said. "I was looking for you." The hand carefully picked Barnaby up, holding him safely in its warm palm. Soon, he felt the familiar prick of a needle and the soft, strong pull of thread.
One stitch, then two, then three, then FOUR. He was being sewn right back onto his little blue coat. He was home. He was right back in his spot, nestled between his other button friends, who all seemed to shine a little brighter now that he was back. And from his perfect place on the coat, hanging safely on its hook, Barnaby could look out over the quiet, sleepy room. He felt warm, he felt safe, and he knew he was EXACTLY where he belonged.
