Around the World in Stories: Journey to Ancient Egypt on the Nile

Cleopatra, the last pharaoh of Egypt, lived closer in time to YOU than she did to the building of the Great Pyramid of Giza. Last week, we chased legends of dragons down Vietnam’s Red River, but today… today we travel waaay further back. We're going to a place the ancients called Kemet, the Black Land, and we’re sailing on the longest river in the world. Close your eyes. Can you feel it? The gentle rock of a boat, a wooden one called a felucca with a single, giant sail. The sun is warm on your face, and the air smells of dust, water, and something ancient.

This is the Nile. For thousands of years, this river was EVERYTHING. It was the highway, the grocery store, and the heart of all life in Egypt. Every year, it would flood, leaving behind a layer of rich, dark mud—the “black land” that gave the country its first name. They even had a special god for the river’s gifts, named Hapi. They didn't just hope for the floods. They measured them! With a special device called a Nilometer. It was like a set of stairs going down into the river. The priests would watch how many steps the water covered, and they could predict if the harvest would be good, or if a dangerous flood was coming.

It was an ancient warning system! And everywhere along the banks, you see reminders of other gods. Over two THOUSAND of them. My favorite has to be Bastet. She was the goddess of music, joy… and cats. Cats were SACRED here. They weren't just pets; they were protectors. People believed they were so special that when a family cat passed away, it was often mummified, just like a person, wrapped in linen bandages to prepare it for the afterlife. Can you imagine finding a tiny cat mummy, thousands of years old? Now, the river bends.

And you see it. At first, it’s just a shape. A triangle against the hazy blue sky. But then you get closer. And closer. And you realize it’s not just a shape. It’s a mountain. A mountain made by human hands. The Great Pyramid of Giza. It is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World that is still standing. It’s so big, so old, it feels like it wasn’t built, but that it GREW right out of the desert. These weren't just buildings. They were tombs. Giant, stone resting places for the pharaohs, filled with treasures they’d need for their journey into the afterlife.

The Egyptians believed that life didn't end. It just… changed. Your soul, your ka, would live on forever, so your body had to be preserved perfectly. That's why they created mummies. It was a way of packing for the longest trip imaginable. And standing here, with the warm sand under your feet, looking up at stones placed four and a half THOUSAND years ago... you remember Cleopatra. She saw these same pyramids. But the people who built them were already ancient history to her. It makes your head spin, doesn't it? So what does it all add up to?

It means you are standing in a story that is so long, it has chapters that are thousands of years apart. The sun begins to set, turning the pyramids from tan to gold to a deep purple shadow.
