Squeaky the squirrel was balancing on the very tip-top of the tallest pine tree, his nose twitching. He was on a quest. Just the other day, he'd heard how Puddle the Duckling found a secret world of glowing moss right under the pond. That story made Squeaky's whiskers tingle with wonder. If there were secrets hidden under the water, surely there were secrets hidden in the trees.
He was looking for the Whispering Acorn, which was said to hold all the softest dreams in the entire forest. He scurried down the long trunk, his little heart thumping with gentle excitement. First, he asked Barnaby the Badger, who was busy arranging pebbles by his front door. "An acorn?" Barnaby grumbled kindly. "It's nearly bedtime, little friend, not snack time." Squeaky thanked him and scampered on.
Next, he found Willow, the wise old owl, just waking up for her night flight. She blinked her big, golden eyes. "Ah, the Whispering Acorn," she hooted softly. "It is not something you find with your eyes, little one. It is something you hear when you are ready to listen." So Squeaky listened. He put his ear to the bark of the great oak and heard the slow, steady thump of the tree's heart.
He sat by the babbling brook and heard it humming sleepy stories to the smooth stones. He listened to the leaves rustling a soft lullaby in the evening breeze. He heard so many wonderful, sleepy sounds. But not one of them was an acorn. His bushy tail began to droop. The sun had long set, and a big yawn stretched his tiny jaw. Feeling very sleepy and a little disappointed, Squeaky climbed back up to his own little nest.
It was tucked in a warm hollow, filled with the softest moss and dandelion fluff he had collected all summer. He curled into a tiny ball, pulling his fluffy tail over his nose like the world's coziest blanket. And just as his eyes drifted closed, he heard it. A soft, gentle, rustling whisper. He peeked one eye open. The sound wasn’t coming from the forest below.
It was right here. In his own nest. He realized the whisper was the sound of the soft moss settling around him. It was the rustle of his own tail as he got comfortable. It was the feeling of being safe, and warm, and ready for sleep. The wise owl was right. The Whispering Acorn wasn't a thing to find out in the world. It was a feeling you discovered inside.
It was the magic you make for yourself when you snuggle into your own cozy bed. Squeaky smiled a tiny squirrel smile. He hadn't found the acorn, but he had found its whisper. And snuggling deeper into his blankets, he let that peaceful sound carry him away into a forest full of the softest dreams.
