The tiniest sound in the whole wide world is a dewdrop falling on a mushroom. Plink. Last night, we visited our friend Silas the Snail in his moonlit garden. Well, living right next to that garden, in a great big meadow, is a little mouse named Milo. And Milo heard that tiny sound. His whiskers twitched. His little black eyes opened. The whole meadow was sparkling under the big, gentle moon. Every blade of grass, every clover leaf, held a tiny drop of water.

They glittered like a carpet of fallen stars. Milo crept out of his warm little nest. He had a very important idea. Tonight, he would find the most beautiful, most shimmering dewdrop in the entire meadow. His quiet adventure began. First, he saw a dewdrop balanced on the tip of a long green blade of grass. He crept closer. Inside the tiny drop, he could see a perfect, curved sliver of the moon. It was very beautiful. But was it the most beautiful?

Milo wasn't sure. So he kept going. He scampered over to a patch of purple clover. There, nestled in the center of a leaf, was a whole family of dewdrops. Seven of them, all huddled together. They sparkled like a tiny diamond necklace left behind by a fairy. Milo wiggled his nose. It was lovely to see them all together, but he was looking for one, single, special drop. He padded on, his little paws making no sound on the soft earth.

He passed a ladybug, fast asleep on a daisy petal. He peeked under a fluffy dandelion clock. He saw dozens of dewdrops… hundreds, maybe. Each one was a tiny, perfect mirror for the night sky. He was starting to feel a little sleepy. This was a harder quest than he thought. How could he ever choose? Just then, as a soft breeze whispered through the grass, he saw something shimmer. It wasn't on a leaf. It wasn't on a flower. Stretched between two yellow buttercups was a single strand of spider silk, almost invisible.

And hanging from the very center of that strand… was one dewdrop. It floated in the cool night air. And when Milo looked inside this one, he held his breath. It didn't just hold the moon. It held everything. He could see the whole sky, with every single tiny, faraway star, all held inside one perfect, trembling drop of water. Wow. Milo sat perfectly still for a long, long time. He didn't try to touch it. He knew this treasure wasn't for him to have.

It was for him to see. And that was more than enough. His little mouse heart felt full and calm. He had found it. With a big, sleepy yawn, Milo turned and headed for home. He trotted back past the sleeping ladybug and the clover patch. He found his cozy nest under the roots of the old oak tree, and curled into a tiny, warm ball. And as he drifted off to sleep, he dreamed of a single, perfect star, floating in a drop of water, in the middle of the quiet, peaceful night.
