Pippin's Gentle Journey: A Bedtime Adventure Across the Moss-Patch

Pippin the mushroom had exactly seventeen gills under his little brown cap. He knew that big adventures sometimes took a long time, the way our friend Rosie the Rosebud learned to wait for the sun. But Pippin felt that even a small adventure was better than no adventure at all. So today, he decided to be brave. He would journey all the way to the other side of the great green moss-patch. He took a deep breath that smelled of damp earth and sleepy roots. One step. Then another. The moss felt like a soft, springy carpet under his little stalk.

It was a whole world of green hills and valleys. He passed a ladybug, fast asleep on a clover pillow. He tiptoed so he wouldn't wake her. Then he saw it. A great wall, blocking his path. It was crinkly and brown, with rivers of lines running all over it. To a little mushroom, the fallen oak leaf looked as big as a mountain. How would he ever get across? He felt the edge. It was dry and rustly. He put one foot up... and then the other... and began to climb. Up, up, up the big brown mountain-leaf. The world seemed sooooo big from the very top.

When he reached the other side and slid down, he landed in a place he had never seen before. And there... right in front of him... was a jewel. It was a perfect, single drop of morning dew, hanging from the tip of a blade of grass. And inside it... ohhh, inside it was MAGIC. It wasn't just water. Pippin leaned closer and saw the whole world captured inside that tiny drop. He saw the tall, tall trees reaching for the sky. He saw a little sliver of the moon, still awake. Everything was tiny, and shimmery, and upside-down.

A secret world, just for HIM. Pippin sat there for a long, long time, just looking. He felt like he had discovered the forest's biggest secret. When the sun began to warm his cap, he knew it was time to go home. He climbed back over the leaf-mountain, which didn't seem so scary anymore. He walked back across the soft moss-carpet, which now felt like the coziest home in the world. He snuggled back into his favorite spot, right where he started. He was the same little mushroom, in the same little patch of moss. But now he knew that you don't have to be big to find wonder.

Sometimes, the biggest magic is found in the tiniest, quietest places. And he drifted off to sleep, dreaming of a tiny, upside-down world, held inside a single drop of dew.
