A single, tiny wisp of steam rose from the warm mug. He was much warmer than our friend Flicker the snowflake, but just as curious about the world. This little wisp of steam was named Puffy. And he was brand new. He felt light. Sooo light. He floated up, up, up, leaving the cozy warmth of the chocolatey drink behind. The whole room was a giant, quiet space waiting to be explored. Puffy bobbed on the air, wondering where to go first.

A gentle, golden glow called to him. It was the bedside lamp. He drifted closer. The light was warm, like a tiny sun just for this room. He could see little specks of dust dancing in its beam. To Puffy, they looked like faraway stars. He twirled among them, a silent, misty dancer in a golden ballroom. He felt the gentle heat on his cloudy edges. It was lovely. But his journey was just beginning. He floated on.

Over a book left open on the nightstand. Down below, he saw neat rows of tiny, black shapes. Like a forest of little trees printed on a field of white snow. He couldn't read the words, of course. But he could feel the quiet of the story sleeping on the page. A story waiting for morning. He drifted past the corner of a big, soft pillow. He could see the tiny threads it was made from, a soft, woven world.

And just beyond the pillow, he saw the gentle rise and fall of your breathing. So peaceful. So quiet. He didn't want to disturb you. He just watched for a moment, feeling the calm in the room. He wanted to see... well, he wanted to see EVERYTHING. A cool little river of air tickled his side. It was coming from the window. He let the gentle current carry him across the last bit of the room. The air grew cooler and cooler.

And then… he touched the glass. It was cold. And smooth. And perfectly clear. For the first time, Puffy saw what was outside. He saw the dark, sleepy shapes of the trees in the yard. Their branches were like sleeping arms against the sky. And high above them all… was the moon. Oh, the moon. It was a perfect, shining silver coin in the deep, dark blue. It wasn't warm like the lamp. It was a cool, gentle light.

A quiet light. Puffy pressed himself against the windowpane. In the glass, he saw a tiny, faint puff of steam looking back at him. And in that reflection, he could also see the great, big moon. He felt the cold of the glass seeping into him. It didn’t hurt. It just made him feel… different. Lighter. Thinner. He felt himself beginning to unfurl, to spread out. He wasn't scared. It felt like the most natural thing in the world.

Slowly, gently, he stretched and thinned until he wasn't a little puff anymore. He was just… air. He had become part of the quiet night inside the room. His wonderful little journey was over. The moonlight still streamed through the window, onto the floor. And now, the very air that held the light also held the gentle memory of Puffy.
