Flicker was born with six perfect, feathery arms. Just last night, we floated with Glimmer, the tiniest dream, through the moonlit sky. Tonight, we meet a different kind of traveler, one made of ice and air, on its own quiet adventure. Flicker wasn't alone up there. It was nestled deep inside a soft, grey cloud, a place that felt like the whole world's pillow. Around it were millions… and millions… of other tiny snowflakes.
Each one was a secret, a tiny frozen miracle. Some were like sharp, clear needles. Others were like tiny, flat plates. But Flicker… Flicker was a star. A perfect crystal star, with delicate ferns of ice branching from each of its six arms. It caught the faint light from the moon hiding behind the cloud, and for a moment, it glowed. It was so quiet in the cloud. A hushed, waiting sort of quiet, like the world holding its breath.
Then, a gentle nudge. A feeling of letting go. It was time. Flicker began to fall. Down… and down… and down. It wasn't a scary fall. It was more like floating. Like a dandelion seed on the wind. It twirled and spun in a slow, graceful dance. It drifted past other snowflakes, each one on its own secret journey to the sleeping world below. The air was cold and crisp and utterly still. Below, the world was a patchwork of dark and light.
Tiny golden squares glowed here and there. Were those warm windows in sleeping houses? Long, dark fingers reached up toward the sky — the bare branches of winter trees, waiting for their blanket. A gentle current of air caught Flicker, and for a moment, it swooped upwards again, getting a better view. It saw the dark ribbon of a frozen creek, and the long, straight line of a country road. The wind whispered a soft song, a lullaby just for the falling snow.
Flicker wondered… where would it land? What small, quiet place would be its home for the night? It was a gentle mystery, a soft question carried on the breeze. It didn't feel any hurry to know the answer. The journey itself was too BEAUTIFUL. As it drifted lower, one dark shape grew bigger than the rest. It was a giant pine tree, standing like a silent guardian at the edge of a field. Its needles were already dusted with a light sugar of snow from the first flakes to arrive.
A single branch reached out, a little lower than the others, as if offering a gentle welcome. Flicker felt a quiet pull toward it. This was it. This was the place. It wasn't a grand destination, not the top of a mountain or a big, bright city. It was just a quiet branch on a quiet tree. And it felt PERFECT. It spun one last time, its six feathery arms glittering in the moonlight that now shone bright and clear. And then… touchdown.
The softest, quietest landing you could ever imagine. Flicker came to rest on the tip of a pine needle, right next to another snowflake that looked like a tiny wheel. And another that looked like a column. All around, its brothers and sisters were landing, too. On the roof of the little farmhouse. On the top rail of the wooden fence. On the quiet, sleeping garden where flowers would grow in the spring. They were covering the world in a soft, white blanket.
Muffling every sound. Making everything clean, and new, and peaceful. The sharp edges of the world were gone, replaced by soft curves. From its new home on the pine branch, Flicker looked out at the transformed world. The whole land seemed to be tucked in and dreaming under its new white quilt. And under the quiet watch of the moon, the snow kept falling… softly… gently… covering everything in a deep and silent sleep.
