A single willow tree can drink fifty gallons of water in one single day. That’s more water than you can even imagine! Pip the Owl, after his big moonlit adventure, told Barnaby the Bunny about a very special tree in their meadow—the Whispering Willow. Barnaby the Bunny had a very important question. He was tucked in his burrow, his little nose twitching. The sun had painted the sky in soft shades of orange and sleepy pink.
And from across the meadow, he could hear it. A soft, rustling sound. A shhhhhh… shhhhhh… shhhhhh. Everyone called it the Whispering Willow. But what… was it whispering? Barnaby’s curiosity was even bigger than his fluffy white tail. He just had to know. So he wiggled his nose, hopped out of his warm bed, and tiptoed into the twilight. The air was cool and smelled of damp earth and sweet clover.
The grass was like a soft green carpet under his paws. First, he passed a family of field mice, all snuggled together. "Squeak," they whispered. "Where are you going, Barnaby?" "To find out the willow's secret," he whispered back. He hopped on. The whispers from the tree grew a little louder. They sounded like a secret being told, just for him. He saw a sleepy badger yawning a great big yawn by his den.
"Be careful, little bunny," the badger rumbled gently. "Secrets can be tricky." But Barnaby wasn't scared. He was just… curious. The tree's long, flowing leaves swayed in the evening breeze. It looked like it was waving to him. Come closer… it seemed to say. The whispers were all around him now. Not spooky whispers. No. They sounded like happy secrets. Like the sound of someone humming a very old, very gentle song.
Finally, he was there. Standing right underneath the giant, graceful tree. He looked up, up, up into the thousands of long, skinny leaves. The sound was everywhere. Shhhhhh… shhhhhh. He put his little paw on the tree's trunk. It felt ancient and strong. And that’s when he saw it. It wasn't just the leaves whispering in the wind. Drifting down from the branches, like tiny, fluffy snowflakes, were little seeds.
Each one was attached to a bit of white fluff, like a tiny parachute. The wind would catch them, and the leaves would rustle… shhhhhh… and then the little seeds would float away. The willow wasn't whispering a secret to keep. It was sharing its family with the world. It was saying goodbye to its little seeds as they floated off on their own adventures, to find a new place to grow.
The whispers were lullabies. Barnaby watched them drift into the twilight, little bits of hope floating on the breeze. He suddenly felt very, very sleepy. He yawned a big bunny yawn. The willow's secret was a happy one. It was a secret about growing, and loving, and letting go. He curled up right there at the base of the tree, feeling safe and warm. And as he drifted off to sleep, the last thing he heard was the willow’s gentle song.
Shhhhhh… sleep now, little one… shhhhhh.
