Turn Obsidian notes into an audio show

Export an Obsidian note or folder to PDF or HTML and upload it to Lissin for a narrated show. How to handle wikilinks, Dataview blocks and a whole vault.

The short answer

Obsidian’s Export to PDF turns one note into a file Lissin can read. For a folder, use the Pandoc or Webpage HTML plugin to produce a single HTML file first. Upload it, say what kind of show you want, and Lissin writes and narrates it.

How to do it

  1. One note: use the built-in PDF export

    File → Export to PDF, from the note itself. Turn off ‘Include filename as title’ if the filename is a date or an ID — otherwise the show opens by reading ‘2026-04-11-b’. Everything rendered in Reading view makes it into the text layer, which means Dataview and Templater output is captured as it currently resolves.

  2. A folder or a whole vault: export HTML

    The Webpage HTML Export community plugin will flatten a folder into a single HTML file, which Lissin reads directly. This is the practical route for turning a research vault into a series, because it preserves note order and heading hierarchy that the script can follow.

  3. Strip wikilinks before you export

    [[Double bracket]] links narrate as the bare note name with no context, and a note dense with them reads aloud as a list of filenames. Either export from Reading view, which renders them as plain text, or ask for a show that ‘explains the ideas rather than reading the notes’.

Questions

Can Lissin read my vault directly from disk?
No, and it should not — a vault is usually somebody’s entire private thinking. Lissin reads what you deliberately export and upload, one file at a time.
How do I turn a research vault into a series rather than one episode?
Export in themed batches and upload each as its own show, or set up a recurring show described by the subject and let Lissin research it on a schedule. Fifty notes in one file produces one long, flat episode; five files of ten produce a series with shape.
Will it read my daily notes?
It will, but daily notes are the worst case for this: they are fragmentary by design, and a script written from them tends to narrate the fragments. Ask for a synthesis across the period instead of a reading.

What this does not do

Canvas files, graph views and embedded PDFs do not survive either export path. Callouts and code blocks come through as prose, which flattens the distinction between a warning and an aside.
