Navy SEALs use a specific breathing pattern to maintain calm and focus in life-or-death situations. In our last daily reset, we touched that place of calm. Today, we’re going to build it a structure called Box Breathing. Find a comfortable seat. Upright, but not rigid. Let your hands rest in your lap. Close your eyes, or lower your gaze to a soft focus on the floor in front of you.
First, just arrive. Notice the air on your skin. The points of contact between your body and the chair… or the floor. Feel the weight of yourself, grounded. Now, bring your awareness to your breath. Don’t change it. Just observe. The rise and fall of your chest or belly. The rhythm it has, all on its own. This is your starting point.
The pattern we will use is simple. It is a square. Four equal sides. We will inhale for a count of four. We will hold the breath in for a count of four. We will exhale for a count of four. And we will hold the breath out for a count of four. Inhale. Hold. Exhale. Hold. Four counts for each side of the box. Let’s begin together.
First, a gentle breath in through your nose. And a full, slow breath out through your mouth. Emptying the lungs completely. Now. We begin the box. Inhale through the nose… two… three… four. Hold the breath at the top… two… three… four. Exhale slowly through the nose… two… three… four. Hold the breath at the bottom… two… three… four.
Again. Inhale… two… three… four. Hold. Soften your shoulders… two… three… four. Exhale… let it go… two… three… four. Hold. Notice the stillness here… two… three… four. Inhale… filling up… two… three… four. Hold… present in the fullness… two… three… four. Exhale… gently releasing… two… three… four. Hold… quiet in the emptiness… two… three… four.
If your mind wanders, that’s okay. That’s what minds do. Just notice it, and gently guide your attention back to the count. Back to the breath. Let’s continue. Inhale… one… two… three… four. Hold… one… two… three… four. Exhale… one… two… three… four. Hold… one… two… three… four. Inhale… one… two… three… four. Hold… one… two… three… four.
Exhale… one… two… three… four. Hold… one… two… three… four. One last round. Make it your most focused. Inhale… two… three… four. Hold… two… three… four. Exhale… two… three… four. Hold… two… three… four. Now… let go of the count. Let your breath return to its natural rhythm. No effort. No structure. Just breathing. Stay here for a moment.
Notice how your body feels. Notice the quality of your mind. Is there more space? More quiet? There is no right answer. Just observation. This calm is not something you found. It is something you BUILT. Breath by breath. You can build it again, anytime you need it. Four seconds in. Four seconds hold. Four seconds out. Four seconds hold.
That structure is always available to you. Slowly, when you’re ready, you can bring some gentle movement back to your fingers and toes. Maybe a slow roll of the neck. And when you feel ready, you can open your eyes. You carry this stillness with you now. It is yours.
