A single deep breath can trigger a twenty-five percent drop in cortisol levels in under a minute. In our last session, we talked about the need to reset and recharge. This is the mechanism. The direct line to your body’s calm state. So let's find it. Find a place where you can be still for the next few minutes. Seated in a chair, feet flat on the floor. Or lying on your back, letting the ground hold you completely.
It doesn't matter where. Just that you can be uninterrupted. Close your eyes if that feels right. Let your attention settle on your body. The weight of it. The points of contact with the chair, or the floor. Now, take one hand and place it flat on the center of your chest. Take your other hand and place it on your belly, just above your navel. For a moment, just notice your breath as it is.
No need to change it. Just feel the movement under your hands. Maybe you feel the top hand rising and falling. Maybe you feel nothing at all. That’s fine. We're just gathering information. Most of the time, our breathing is shallow. It lives up in the chest. A survival breath. Quick. Anxious. We’re going to go deeper. Bring all your awareness to the hand on your belly.
On your next inhale, breathe in slowly through your nose. And as you do, send the breath down. Past your chest. Down into your abdomen. The goal is to make your lower hand rise, while your top hand stays relatively still. Breathe in… feel the belly expand like a balloon. And now, a slow, gentle exhale through your mouth. Let the belly fall. Let the hand sink back down.
That’s it. That’s the entire practice. Let’s do it again. Inhale through the nose. Send the air down, down, down. Feel the stomach press out into your hand. Hold for just a beat. And exhale. Let it all go. A long, slow release. Feel your shoulders drop as the air leaves. The body knows what to do. You just have to give it permission. Let’s find a rhythm. In for a count of four.
Out for a count of six. I’ll count the first two. Inhale… two… three… four. Feel that expansion. Exhale… two… three… four… five… six. Feel that release. Again. Inhale… two… three… four. Your belly rises. Your chest is quiet. Exhale… two… three… four… five… six. Tension leaving your jaw. Your neck. Now, on your own. Find your own rhythm. Your own pace. The only instruction is to let the belly do the work.
The inhale pushes it out. The exhale lets it fall. If your mind wanders, that’s what minds do. Don't fight it. Just notice it. And then guide your attention right back to the feeling of your hand rising… and falling. Take one final, deep breath in. The deepest one yet. Fill the belly completely. And let it all go with a sigh. Let your hands rest in your lap, or by your sides.
Keep your eyes closed for another moment. Notice the shift. The quiet. The space you just created. This state is not something you have to earn. It’s your factory setting. You just remembered the password.
