The vagus nerve, the longest cranial nerve in your body, can lower your heart rate in just a few seconds when stimulated. Last time, we used the structure of box breathing to find calm focus. Today, we go deeper into the physical mechanism that makes it all work—the simple act of a deep, diaphragmatic breath. Find a comfortable position. Lying down on your back is best for this, if you can.

On a bed, a mat, or the floor. Knees bent or legs straight, whatever feels right. If you’re seated, just find a tall spine and let your shoulders drop. Close your eyes if you feel safe to do so. Take one hand and place it on your upper chest. Take your other hand and place it on your belly, right around your navel. For the next minute, just breathe normally.

Don't change a thing. Simply notice the movement under your hands. Which hand is moving more? The one on your chest, or the one on your belly? There’s no right answer. Just awareness. Most of us, most of the time, are chest breathers. It’s shallow. It’s quick. It’s the breath of stress. We’re going to change that right now. Keep your hands where they are. The hand on your chest is going to be your anchor.

Your goal is to keep it as STILL as possible. The hand on your belly is your guide. It’s going to rise and fall. Let’s begin. Gently exhale all the air from your lungs. Get it all out. Now, through your nose, take a slow, deep breath IN. And as you do, send all that air down into your belly. Feel your stomach expand, pushing your hand up toward the ceiling.

The hand on your chest… barely moves. At the top, hold it for just a moment. And now, gently EXHALE through your mouth or nose. Let your belly fall. Feel your hand sink back down. That’s it. That’s the entire practice. Let’s find a rhythm. Inhale through the nose… belly rises. One… two… three… four. Exhale… belly falls. One… two… three… four… five. Again. Inhale.

Fill the lowest part of your lungs. Your chest is quiet. Your belly is full. Exhale. A slow release. Let it all go. Continue on your own. The hand on your chest is still. The hand on your belly rises… and falls. This is your body’s built-in switch. The one that tells your nervous system that you are safe. You are not forcing calm. You are not chasing it. You are simply breathing in a way that allows it to arrive.

Inhale… space. Exhale… release. Take two more full, deep breaths just like that. Make them your deepest yet. When you’re ready, let your breathing return to its natural rhythm. Let your hands rest by your sides. Notice the shift. The quiet. The stillness you created. This isn’t a theory. It’s physiology. You just changed your state with your breath. Slowly begin to bring awareness back into your body.

Wiggle your fingers. Wiggle your toes. When you feel ready, gently open your eyes. Your breath is your anchor. You can always come back to it.
