A 2013 study found that just five minutes of alternate nostril breathing can significantly lower your heart rate. In our last session, Admin, we worked with intentional breathing to find your center. Today, we use a specific, ancient structure to bring that balance into even sharper focus.

This practice is called Nadi Shodhana, which translates to "channel purification." It doesn't require belief. It just requires your breath. Let's begin. Find a comfortable seat. Spine tall, but not rigid. Shoulders soft, away from your ears. Allow your eyes to gently close. Just for a moment, simply arrive.

Notice the weight of your body in the chair. The feeling of the air on your skin. And the natural rhythm of your breath, just as it is. No need to change anything yet. Now, bring your right hand up toward your face. We'll create a hand position called Vishnu Mudra. Fold your index finger and your middle finger down toward your palm.

Your thumb, ring finger, and pinky finger remain extended. Your thumb will gently close the right nostril, and your ring finger will gently close the left. If this feels awkward, you can also rest your index and middle fingers on the space between your eyebrows. Find what works for you.

There is no perfect way. There is only your way. Rest your left hand comfortably in your lap, palm facing up. Take a deep, clearing breath in through both nostrils. And a full, slow exhale out through both. Now, use your right thumb to gently close your right nostril. Inhale slowly and deeply through the left nostril.

One… two… three… four. At the top of the breath, close the left nostril with your ring finger, so both are now gently closed. Hold the breath for just a moment. A point of stillness. Now, release your thumb and exhale slowly and completely through your right nostril. One… two… three… four… five… six.

Making the exhale a little longer than the inhale. Stay here. Inhale through the right nostril. Slow and steady. One… two… three… four. Close the right nostril with the thumb. Both are closed. A brief, quiet pause. Release your ring finger and exhale fully through the left nostril. One… two… three… four… five… six.

That is one complete round. We will continue. Inhale through the left. Close. Hold the stillness. Exhale through the right. Letting everything go. Inhale through the right. Filling up. Close. A moment of quiet suspension. Exhale through the left. A complete release. Again. Inhale left. Smooth and silent.

Pause at the top. Exhale right. Soft and long. Inhale right. Drawing in calm. Pause. Centered. Exhale left. Emptying completely. Continue on your own for three more rounds. Your own pace. Your own rhythm. There is no rush. Just the simple flow of breath. In one side, and out the other. Finding a rhythm that feels balancing.

Calming. Let your next exhale be through the left nostril. After that exhale, release your right hand down to your lap. Keep your eyes closed. Return to your natural breath. Flowing in and out of both nostrils now. And just… notice. Notice the quality of your mind. Notice the feeling in your body.

There may be a sense of quiet. A sense of balance between the right and left sides. You don't have to search for it. Simply be open to what is here. The two sides of your body, and your mind, are in communication. You just spent five minutes making that conversation clear. This equilibrium is now your baseline.

Carry it with you.
