The human jaw can exert up to two hundred seventy pounds of force. In our last session, Admin, we used the delicate work of Nadi Shodhana to find balance. Today, we are not looking for balance. We are looking for what needs to be put down. So let’s begin. Find a comfortable position. Seated or lying down.
It does not matter. What matters is that for the next few minutes, you are supported. Close your eyes if you feel safe to do so. And just… arrive. Notice the weight of your body. The points of contact. The chair, the floor, the bed beneath you. Feel it holding you. You don’t need to hold yourself up right now.
Bring your awareness to your breath. Not changing it. Not controlling it. Simply noticing. The air entering your nose. The rise of your chest and belly. And the fall. The gentle release as you exhale. This is your anchor. This breath. Always here. Now, we will begin a journey through the body. The goal is not to fix anything.
The goal is to notice. Bring your attention all the way down to your feet. What do you feel? Is there tightness in the arches? Tension in the toes? Just notice. Allow your awareness to travel up. Through the ankles. The calves. The knees. Into the large muscles of your thighs. Searching for any holding. Any tightness.
And on the next breath in, bring your awareness to your hips and your lower back. A place we hold so much. What is there for you today? No judgment. Just awareness. Now, moving into your belly. Your chest. Let the breath be soft here. And now… the shoulders. Let your awareness rest right where your neck meets your shoulders.
Feel the landscape of this area. Is there a knot? A tightness? A sense of weight? Good. You’ve found it. Now we know where to work. On your next inhale, I want you to breathe INTO that specific point of tension. Imagine the breath surrounding it. Not forcing. Just bringing awareness. And on the exhale… let it go.
Imagine the knot gently unwinding. Imagine the tension flowing out of your body with the breath. Dissolving. Let’s do that again. Inhale, bringing awareness to the tension. Exhale… and release it. Let it soften. Now bring that same attention to your jaw. Unclench your teeth. Let there be space between the top and bottom rows.
Breathe in. And as you breathe out, allow the jaw to go slack. Feel the muscles in your cheeks soften. Finally, your forehead. The space between your eyebrows. Inhale, notice any tension there. Exhale… and smooth it out. Let it go completely. For the next few moments, just be here. Breathing. Noticing the space you’ve created.
The ease. The quiet. The tension is not gone forever. It will come back. That is the nature of things. But now you know the way out. It is always there. On the other side of the exhale. When you are ready, slowly begin to bring some awareness back to the room. Wiggle your fingers and your toes. Gently open your eyes.
This physical ease belongs to you. You just uncovered it.
