The human body can release a surge of cortisol, the primary stress hormone, in less than a single second. In our last session, we worked on resetting and recharging after the day’s pressures landed. Today, we build the capacity to meet that pressure head-on, from a place of strength. Let’s begin. Find your seat, Admin. Feel the points of contact.
Your feet on the floor. Your body in the chair. Allow your spine to lengthen, just a bit. Shoulders drop away from the ears. Hands resting in your lap. And simply arrive right here. In this body. In this moment. We will start with a simple, even breath. A box breath. In for four… hold for four… out for four… and hold for four.
I’ll guide you. Let all the air out. And now. Breathe in. Two. Three. Four. Hold the breath. Two. Three. Four. Exhale slowly. Two. Three. Four. And hold the empty. Two. Three. Four. Again. Inhale. Two. Three. Four. Hold at the top. Full. Calm. Exhale. Let it go. Two. Three. Four. Hold at the bottom. Still. Quiet. One more time, on your own. Following that rhythm.
Noticing the four distinct parts of the cycle. The expansion… the pause… the release… the stillness. This is your foundation. Your baseline. A place you can always return to. Now we change the work. Resilience isn’t the absence of pressure. It’s the ability to hold it without breaking. To feel the stress, acknowledge it, and choose your response.
We’re going to adjust the breath to build that capacity. The inhale and the hold will stay the same. We will lengthen the exhale. This is where the real work happens. Lengthening the exhale sends a powerful signal of safety to your nervous system. It tells your body: I am in control. Let’s try it. Let all the air out. Now, a full breath in.
Two. Three. Four. Hold it at the top. Feel the fullness. Two. Three. Four. Now… a long, slow exhale. Out… two… three… four… five… six. Gently hold the empty. Two. Let’s do that again. Inhale. Two. Three. Four. Hold. Calm and present. Two. Three. Four. Exhale. Longer. Slower. Releasing completely. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. And hold. Two. Feel that shift?
In the moment of holding your breath, there is tension. A challenge. In the long exhale that follows, there is deliberate release. You are teaching your body that it can handle the tension… and then let it go on YOUR terms. This is not theory. This is physiology. You are actively down-regulating your own stress response. Do three more rounds on your own.
In for four. Hold for four. A long, controlled exhale for six. A short pause. You are building the muscle of composure. Now, let your breathing return to its own natural rhythm. No counting. No structure. Just being. Notice the quality of your attention. The stillness in your body. This isn’t a fragile peace you have to protect from the world.
This is forged resilience. It’s a tool you carry with you. Into the next meeting. The next difficult conversation. The next moment of pressure. You now have a physical memory of moving from tension to calm. Carry this stillness with you. It is yours. You built it.
