Breathing through just your left nostril can measurably lower your blood pressure in minutes. Last time, with the structure of Box Breathing, we built a container for stress. Today, we’re going to balance the forces inside it. Find a comfortable seat. Let your spine grow tall, but keep your shoulders soft, away from your ears. Allow your hands to rest in your lap.

Close your eyes. Just notice your breath for a moment. No need to change it. Simply feel the air entering your body, and leaving your body. The natural, easy rhythm of you, right now. This practice is called Alternate Nostril Breathing. It’s a direct way to harmonize the two hemispheres of your brain and soothe your entire nervous system. Bring your right hand up toward your face.

Gently fold your first two fingers—your index and your middle finger—down to touch your palm. You will use your thumb and your ring finger. Take a deep breath in through both nostrils. And a long breath out. Now, gently press your right thumb against your right nostril, closing it off. Breathe IN through your left nostril. For four… three… two… one. Now close your left nostril with your ring finger, so both are closed.

Hold the breath. Four… three… two… one. Release your thumb from the right nostril. Breathe OUT through the right side. Four… three… two… one. Stay here. Breathe IN through the right nostril. Four… three… two… one. Close the right nostril with your thumb. Hold the breath. Four… three… two… one. Release your ring finger. Breathe OUT through the left nostril. Four… three… two… one.

That is one complete round. We will continue. Breathe IN, left. Close and hold. Breathe OUT, right. Breathe IN, right. Close and hold. Breathe OUT, left. Continue on your own now. Find a rhythm that feels steady for you. Inhaling through one side. Pausing at the top. Exhaling through the other. Then inhaling on that same side to begin the journey back. This is not a race.

There is nowhere to get to. You are simply creating a pattern. A circuit. Left brain. Right brain. Sympathetic nervous system. Parasympathetic. With every breath, you are sending a signal of equilibrium. You are teaching your body how to find its own center. It already knows how. You’re just reminding it. Let the movement of your fingers be light. Effortless. Let your breath be smooth.

Unforced. If your mind wanders, and it will, just notice. And gently guide your attention back to the feeling of the air. The simple, physical sensation of your breath moving. Take one more full, complete round. Follow it all the way through. Inhale. Hold. Exhale. Inhale. Hold. Exhale through the left nostril. When you finish, gently release your hand. Let it rest back in your lap.

Keep your eyes closed. Breathe normally, through both nostrils. Notice what has shifted. Feel the quality of the air now. The texture of the silence. There is a stillness here. A clarity. This is the feeling of balance. Carry this feeling with you. Into your next conversation. Your next task. Your next challenge. It is always available. You didn't find balance. You built it.
