To begin, find a position that feels comfortable for you. You might be sitting in a chair, or perhaps lying down. Allow your body to feel supported by the surface beneath it. And when you feel ready, gently allow your eyes to close. Let the day begin to fall away. There is nothing you need to do right now. Nowhere you need to be. Simply arrive here, in this moment. Bring your awareness to your breath.
There is no need to change it in any way. No need to make it deeper or slower. Just notice its natural rhythm. The gentle, automatic flow of air… in and out. Follow one full breath from its beginning to its end. And then another. Notice where you feel the breath most clearly in your body. It might be the feeling of cool air entering your nostrils. And the slightly warmer air as you exhale.
Cool air in. Warm air out. Or maybe you notice the gentle rise and fall of your chest. Or your abdomen. A gentle expansion on the inhale. And a soft release on the exhale. Choose one of these sensations to rest your attention on. Using it as an anchor. Something to hold you in this present moment. Your mind will wander. That is what minds do. Thoughts of the day may arise. Plans for tomorrow might appear.
When you notice your attention has drifted… that is a moment of awareness itself. A small victory. There is no need for judgment. No need to criticize yourself. Simply notice where your mind has gone. And then, very gently… guide your attention back. Back to the feeling of your breath. Back to the coolness of the inhale. The warmth of the exhale. The rise and fall of your body. You may have to do this many times.
And each time you do… you are practicing. Each return is a moment of quiet care. Letting thoughts come and go like clouds passing in the sky. You are the sky. The thoughts are just weather passing through. You can remain still… and simply watch them drift by. Resting in the space between your thoughts. Resting in the steady rhythm of your breath. Inhale. And exhale. Letting go of the day with each breath out.
Allowing your body to soften. Allowing your mind to quiet. Take one more moment here. In this stillness. In this quiet. And when you feel ready, you can begin to bring your awareness back. Gently notice the sounds in the room around you. Feel the air on your skin. The day is complete. You can rest now.
