The average person has about sixty thousand thoughts in a single day. In our last time together for Gentle Nightfall, we created a space for gentle closure. Tonight, we’ll invite each of those thoughts to simply float away. So let’s begin.

Find your way to a comfortable position. Lying down, feeling the support of the surface beneath you. Allowing your eyes to gently close. And just for a moment… listen. Not for anything in particular. Just noticing the quiet space you are in.

Now, bring your awareness to your breath. Feeling the gentle rise and fall of your chest. No need to change anything. Simply noticing the air as it enters… and as it leaves. Each exhale is a quiet release. A soft letting go. As you continue to breathe… let’s begin to scan the body.

Starting with your toes. Just noticing how they feel. Allowing any tension to soften. Moving your awareness up into your feet… your ankles… your calves. Noticing any tightness, any holding. And with your exhale, just inviting it to release.

Feeling the weight of your legs… heavy and relaxed. Noticing your hips… and your lower back… sinking into the surface beneath you. Letting go of the day’s posture. Bringing your awareness up into your stomach… your chest. And now your shoulders.

We hold so much in our shoulders. Allow them to drop. To soften. To release their grip. Feeling your arms… your hands… your fingers. Heavy. Warm. And still. And finally… your neck… your jaw… the tiny muscles around your eyes. Let the jaw be slack.

Let the space between your eyebrows feel smooth and wide. Your whole body is now resting. Heavy… and at ease. Now… I invite you to imagine something. Picture a gentle, slow-moving stream. The water is clear, and soft green leaves float peacefully on its surface.

Or perhaps… you see a vast, clear blue sky… with soft, white clouds drifting lazily by. Choose whichever image feels most peaceful to you. As a thought arises in your mind… a worry… a memory from the day… a plan for tomorrow… just notice it.

And then, gently… place that thought onto one of the floating leaves… or onto one of the soft, white clouds. And then… watch. Watch as the leaf slowly drifts down the stream… carried away by the current. Or watch as the cloud floats across the sky… until it disappears over the horizon.

You don’t have to push it. You don’t have to force it. You are simply allowing it to go. Another thought will come. And when it does… you do the same. Gently place it on a new leaf… a new cloud. And watch it, too, float away. One by one. Releasing each thought.

Releasing each worry. Your mind becomes the clear sky. Your body becomes the quiet stream. Light. Free. And open. Rest here now. In this stillness. Nothing to do. Nowhere to be. Just this gentle quiet. Just this peace.
