A single deep breath can lower your heart rate in just a few seconds. In our last time together, we invited a sense of gentle closure to the day. Tonight, we’ll guide that same gentleness into the body… letting go of any tension held from the hours now past. There is nothing you need to do.

Nothing to fix or to change. Simply begin by finding a position for rest. Lying down in your bed, or perhaps seated comfortably. Allowing the eyes to close whenever you feel ready. And just begin to notice your breath. Not trying to control it. Simply feeling the air as it enters… and as it leaves.

The gentle rise of the chest or the belly. The gentle fall. Each breath an invitation to soften. Each exhale a chance to let go. Now, bring your awareness to the very top of your head. Just noticing any sensation there. And with your next exhale, imagine the skin of your scalp softening.

Allow that softness to move down into your forehead. Releasing the space between your eyebrows. Letting the tiny muscles around your eyes relax. Bring your awareness to your jaw. This is a place we often hold tension without even knowing. Simply allow the jaw to go slack. Perhaps letting the teeth part slightly.

The tongue resting heavy and soft in the mouth. Letting that feeling of release travel down into the neck and the throat. And into the shoulders. Allowing your shoulders to feel heavy… sinking down… away from your ears. Feeling the full support of the surface beneath you.

This gentle wave of softness now flows down both arms. Past the elbows… through the forearms… and all the way to your hands. Noticing your hands. Allowing the fingers to gently curl, or rest open. Completely free of tension. Now bringing your attention back to your torso. Feeling the gentle movement of the breath in your chest… and in your belly.

With each exhale, a little more softening. A sense of letting go in your center. Allowing your hips to feel heavy. Sinking deeply into the mattress or the chair. Releasing any holding here. Just letting gravity have your full weight. You are completely supported. And now that feeling of heaviness and release flows down through your legs.

Through the thighs… the knees… and the calves. Letting go of the day’s movement. Letting the legs be completely still. Finally, bringing awareness all the way down to your feet. To your ankles… the soles of your feet… and each one of your toes. A final release. A final letting go.

Your whole body is now resting. Heavy… soft… and still. There is nowhere else to be. Nothing else to do. Simply sinking into this quiet, peaceful rest. Rest now. Peace is already here.
