The Perseid meteor shower peaked last night, with over one hundred shooting stars per hour visible from dark-sky locations. In our last meditation together, we found a sense of nightfall calm by resting in gratitude. Tonight, we will carry that same gentle spirit into a simple awareness of the breath.
So let’s begin. Find a position that feels comfortable for you. Lying down, perhaps, with your arms resting by your sides. Or sitting, with your spine tall but not rigid. There is nothing you need to do. Nowhere else you need to be. Simply allow your eyes to close, if they haven't already.
And bring your awareness to your breath. Just noticing it. Noticing the natural rhythm of your breathing, right here, right now. There is no need to change it. No need to make it deeper, or slower. Simply observe it, just as it is. Feeling the air as it enters through your nostrils.
Perhaps noticing its temperature. Cool on the way in. And slightly warmer on the way out. Following the journey of the breath. Down into your chest. Feeling the gentle rise and fall. Allowing your attention to rest there. On that simple, steady movement. Inhale. And exhale.
Now, let your awareness travel down into your abdomen. Feeling the soft expansion as you breathe in. And the gentle release as you breathe out. Each breath is a wave of calm. Washing over you. Your mind will wander. That is what minds do. When you notice your thoughts have drifted… to the day that has passed… or to the day that is to come… simply acknowledge them.
Without judgment. And then, gently… very gently… guide your awareness back. Back to the feeling of your breath. This simple anchor. Always here for you. Inhale. And exhale. Letting go of any effort. Allowing the breath to breathe itself. Feeling your body grow heavier.
Softer. Sinking into the surface beneath you. Resting in this quiet space. This peaceful stillness. There is nothing left to do now, but rest. The day is complete. May your sleep be deep and your rest be peaceful.
