The tower had no doors, but it did have a library. Last week, we saw how Snow White’s mirror was less about vanity and more about SURVEILLANCE. This week, we find another story that got the details… wrong. Everyone knows the line. "Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair." They think it was a plea. It wasn't. It was an incantation. Her hair wasn't a rope. It was a conduit. A living antenna for the storm-magic she and her mentor, Mother Gothel, practiced at the top of the world. The tower wasn't a prison. It was a university with a student body of one.
Inside, there was no weeping. There was work. The scent of ozone and old parchment. The hum of power waiting to be shaped. Then, one Tuesday, a prince showed up. His name was Florian, and he was dreadfully well-intentioned. He was riding through the woods when he heard a sound. Not a song of loneliness, but the sharp crackle of a spell hitting a containment field. He looked up. Saw the tower. Saw the impossible cascade of golden hair. And his brain, conditioned by storybooks, filled in all the wrong blanks. He saw a prisoner. He saw a witch.
He saw a hero’s journey, custom-made for him. "Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair!" he bellowed. Up in the lab, Rapunzel paused her work, a miniature thundercloud swirling in a bottle. She looked at Gothel. Gothel just sighed. "Another one. They're worse than the crows." But Rapunzel was curious. She’d read about princes. This was a field test. She let a single, shimmering lock unfurl to the ground. The prince, bless his heart, actually tried to climb it. He was clumsy. Awkward. He was an interruption to her doctorate. "Let me handle this," Rapunzel said.
Gothel just nodded, a small smile on her face. This was the final exam. Florian heaved himself over the windowsill, panting, armor scuffed. He drew his sword. "Fear not, maiden! I am here to save you from this evil enchantress!" Rapunzel didn't even look up from her experiment. She just held up the bottle. The tiny storm inside it flashed with lightning. "Save me? From what? Advanced Elemental Theory?" She flicked her wrist. A single, glowing strand of hair detached itself from the main braid. It wrapped gently, but FIRMLY, around the prince's polished chest plate.
It lifted him. And it floated him back down to the forest floor like the world's most embarrassing elevator. He landed softly in a bed of moss, sword still in his hand, utterly bewildered. Up in the tower, Gothel wasn't just smiling. She was laughing. A real, proud laugh. Rapunzel hadn't just passed a test. She’d surpassed the need for one. The tower was never about keeping her in. It was about giving her a place to learn, far from the distracting, heroic idiots in the woods below. She wasn't waiting for a rescuer. She was becoming the storm.
And she stood at the window, not looking down at the prince, but up at the gathering clouds, her hair glowing with her OWN power, ready to build a much, much taller tower.
