A moon moth doesn't have a mouth. It lives for only one week, just to fly. We talked about little Celeste the star finding her own light last night, and tonight, we'll meet someone who flies IN that light. His name was Milo, and he had just woken up for the very first time. His wings were the color of a pale green sea, soft as dust. They trembled a little in the cool night air. Milo stretched them out… wider… and wider… until they caught the moonlight.
They were HUGE. And at the bottom of his wings were two long, flowing tails, like pale green ribbons. He wiggled them. They worked. He was ready. So, with a gentle push, he lifted off the leaf where he'd been sleeping. Whoa. The world was a giant, quiet garden. The moon was a big, friendly lamp in the sky. Milo felt a tiny pull inside him, a little hum of curiosity. What was out there? He had to see. He floated past roses, all tucked in for the night, their petals closed up like sleeping fists.
He saw a beetle, marching very seriously along a branch, its legs making tiny, careful clicks. Everything was so peaceful. So quiet. Milo flew on, silent as a whisper. He dipped and soared through the silver air, his long tails dancing behind him. He saw a glow up ahead, near the ground. It wasn't a star… it was something different. The little hum of curiosity inside him grew stronger. THAT was where he needed to go. He flew toward the light, his green wings barely making a sound.
The light came from a patch of flowers he’d never seen before. They were called moonflowers, and they only opened at night. They were pure white, and they seemed to shine with their own special light. Milo landed on one. It smelled like sweet vanilla and honey. He drank in the beautiful scent. This was wonderful. But the little pull was still there. He took off again, flying lower now, just above the cool, damp grass. And then he saw it. A perfect, silver circle, shining right on the ground.
It was another moon! But… how could that be? The real moon was up in the sky. He flew closer, very slowly. It wasn't the ground… it was water. A still, dark pond, holding the moon’s reflection like a secret. Milo hovered right over the water, looking down at the perfect, shining moon. And that’s when he saw something else. Looking back up at him from the water… was a moth. A moth with wings the color of a pale green sea. A moth with two long, beautiful tails like ribbons.
It was HIM. He had never seen himself before. He wiggled his left tail. The moth in the water wiggled its left tail. He fluttered his wings, just a little. The moth in the water fluttered back. Oh! He wasn't just a visitor in the moonlight. He was PART of the moonlight’s beauty. The little hum of curiosity inside him settled into a soft, happy purr. This was what he was looking for. He spent the rest of the night dancing over the water. A silent, happy dance with his new friend in the pond.
As the sky began to turn from deep blue to soft grey, Milo felt a little sleepy. He found a big, dark leaf, and settled his beautiful green wings. He was a tiny, perfect jewel, dreaming of his dance with the moon.
