A single dewdrop holds the whole world inside it. The moon had just finished its long journey across the sky, the very same moon that watched Milo the Moon Moth dance on the pond just last night. And as the moon said a sleepy goodbye, a tiny dewdrop named Dewy woke up. He was resting on a big, velvety leaf, smooth and green like a blanket. The garden was quiet. Sooo quiet. It was that special time between the last star and the first sunbeam.
Dewy felt perfectly round, perfectly clear, and perfectly still. He looked down into himself and could see the dark, sleeping shapes of the garden reflected there. It was his own tiny, upside-down world. Then, he felt a little wobble. A tiiiiiny shiver. The leaf he was resting on dipped just a little. Dewy slid a tiny bit, not even as far as a ladybug’s footstep. He looked around and saw his brothers and sisters, hundreds of other dewdrops, each resting on their own leaf or petal.
Each one shimmering in the grey light. He wasn't scared. Oh, no. He was just… curious. What was happening? Very slowly, a sleepy red shell with black spots began to move nearby. It was a ladybug, still tucked in for the night. She stretched one little leg out from under her shell. And that little stretch was just enough to tip the leaf a bit more. Whoosh! Dewy slid a little farther this time. The world inside him swirled and danced.
He slid past the sleeping ladybug, close enough to see his own reflection in her shiny red back. He was on an adventure. And then… it happened. A single, golden ray of sunlight peeked over the garden wall. It traveled like a soft finger, touching the top of the tallest flower, then the fence post, and then… it touched Dewy. Oh! In that one moment, everything changed. He was no longer just a clear little drop of water.
The light filled him up, and he exploded with color. He was red, and orange, and yellow, and green, and blue. A whole rainbow, held inside his tiny, round self. He was a jewel. A tiny, perfect sun catcher, holding ALL the light of the morning. He wasn’t just looking at the world anymore. He was painting it. The light shining through him cast a tiny, brilliant rainbow onto the leaf right beside the ladybug. She stirred, waking up, and her sleepy eyes opened to a patch of beautiful color.
She wiggled her antennae in the pretty light. Dewy felt a warm happiness spread through him. As the sun climbed higher, the leaf grew warmer. Dewy felt himself getting lighter… and lighter. He was changing again. Slowly, gently, he lifted from the leaf. He wasn't a drop anymore. He was a whisper of mist, rising up to join the soft morning air. He floated past the smiling ladybug, and up toward the big, blue sky, dreaming of the next leaf he would visit when the night returned.
