The short answer

NaturalReader is a text-to-speech application: documents in, spoken words out, across desktop and mobile with control over voice and speed. Lissin takes the same documents and produces a written, structured show about them. The question is whether you want the document spoken or explained.

How to choose

  1. Ask what you will do with the audio

    Listening while following the text, or needing the exact contents, points to text-to-speech. Listening on a commute to find out whether the document matters points to a generated show.

  2. Upload the same files

    PDF, DOC, DOCX, PPTX, XLSX and HTML are all read. The change is what you say next: a description of the show you want rather than a play button.

  3. Batch what you cannot face reading

    The strongest case for generating is several documents at once — a quarter of reports, a set of papers — where the useful output is the comparison and no read-aloud tool can produce it.

Questions

Does Lissin have a desktop app?
No. There is an iPhone app and a web player that runs anywhere with a browser.
Can it read a page I am looking at in the browser?
Not in place. There is no browser extension, so you copy the address across and paste it rather than pressing a button in the toolbar — one hop more than a read-aloud extension, and it does fetch the page.
Is it better for dyslexia or visual impairment?
Purpose-built text-to-speech is better for that, and it is not a close call. Those tools track the text, read exactly what is written, and are designed around that use.

What this does not do

No desktop app, no browser extension, no verbatim reading mode worth choosing over a dedicated tool. Lissin is the wrong answer if the requirement is ‘read this to me exactly’.
