How to choose
Ask what you will do with the audio
Listening while following the text, or needing the exact contents, points to text-to-speech. Listening on a commute to find out whether the document matters points to a generated show.
Upload the same files
Lissin reads PDF, DOC, DOCX, PPTX, XLSX and HTML. Instead of pressing play, you then describe the show you want.
Batch what you cannot face reading
Give Lissin several documents at once, such as a quarter’s reports or a set of papers, and ask for a show that compares them. No read-aloud tool can produce that comparison.

Questions
- Does Lissin have a desktop app?
- No. There is an iPhone app and a web player that runs anywhere with a browser.
- Can it read a page I am looking at in the browser?
- Not from the page itself. There is no browser extension, so copy the page’s address and paste it into Lissin, which fetches the page. That is one step more than pressing a read-aloud extension’s toolbar button.
- Is it better for dyslexia or visual impairment?
- No. Dedicated text-to-speech is much better for that. Those tools follow the text on screen, read exactly what is written, and are designed for that use.
What this does not do
Lissin has no desktop app, no browser extension, and no word-for-word reading mode worth choosing over a dedicated tool. If you need a document read to you exactly as written, use a text-to-speech app.
