The short answer

NotebookLM’s Audio Overview turns the sources in a notebook into a conversational summary, and it is genuinely good at it. Lissin is built around the show rather than the notebook: you specify format, tone, length and voice, it keeps a library, and a show can recur on a schedule.

How to choose

  1. Ask whether you want one overview or a standing show

    An overview is a single artefact about a set of sources you gathered. A show is a thing that exists on Tuesday mornings whether or not you gathered anything. Those are different products and the second is what Lissin is for.

  2. Direct the format explicitly

    Lissin takes instructions about shape: length, number of voices, how adversarial, what to skip, who the listener is. A described show is repeatable — the same instruction produces the same kind of episode next week.

  3. Keep it where you listen

    Shows live in an iOS app with offline downloads and a synchronised transcript, and share as a web link anyone can play without an account. That is a distribution shape, not a research-tool shape.

Questions

Is NotebookLM better for research?
For working through a corpus of sources with citations back into them, yes — that is what a notebook is for, and it does it well. Lissin is better once you have decided what you want to hear about regularly.
Can Lissin do the two-host conversational format?
Yes, multi-voice shows including a two-host discussion are one of the formats you can ask for. You can also ask for one narrator, or for the hosts to disagree.
What about sources on the open web?
A Lissin show described by subject rather than by file is researched from the open web on each run, which is how a recurring show stays current without you feeding it.

What this does not do

Lissin does not give you a notebook: there is no source-grounded chat, no per-claim citation view over your documents, and no place to interrogate the material after listening. If the research surface is what you want, that is the wrong trade.
