How to choose
Start with what the audio is for
If the audio is a route into specific documents and you may need to confirm what you heard, NotebookLM is the better fit. You can ask questions about your sources while listening and get citations back. If you want fresh episodes on a subject to keep arriving, Lissin is the better fit. A Lissin show can start from a topic, a question, sources or uploads, and can run once or repeat daily, weekly or every two weeks.
Already using NotebookLM? You may not need to switch
NotebookLM already has a Debate format alongside Deep Dive, Brief and Critique, plus custom prompts for focus and listener expertise, a language choice, and Shorter, Default or Longer length in English. If debate style or a tighter focus is the only thing you want, adjust those settings first. Consider Lissin when you want a show on a schedule rather than an overview of documents you have collected.
Document listening: use NotebookLM for a report you must discuss
Say you have a long industry report to discuss in a meeting. Add it to a notebook, choose Critique to hear the argument tested or Brief for a short version, and use the focus prompt to name what matters, for example: focus on the cost assumptions and anything a finance lead would challenge. When a claim stands out, ask about it and follow the citation back to the passage before you repeat it in the meeting.
Personal show: use Lissin for a weekly briefing
Set creative direction, voice, language and length, then choose a weekly schedule. Example request: Every Friday, give me a 10-minute show on Chicago public transit announcements from the past week. Separate changes that have been officially announced from ones that are only proposed, and say which is which. What this does not do
The report setup and the transit request above are examples of how to set up each tool, not recordings of actual episodes. Any episode can misstate a date, a figure or whether something is confirmed, so check key claims against the original source before acting on them. NotebookLM's citations make that check quicker for documents you have uploaded. Lissin creation needs an iPhone on iOS 26 or later, and free generation is limited. NotebookLM mobile features may differ from the web version.
