Every single snowflake that ever falls has exactly six sides. And just like Stella, the newborn star we met last night, each one begins its journey all alone in the big, quiet sky. Tonight's story is about one of those snowflakes. Her name was Crystal. She had been nestled deep inside a great, gray cloud that felt like the softest pillow in the universe. But a moment came when it was time to go. She felt a gentle nudge, a quiet letting go... and suddenly, she was floating.
The air was crisp and cold and utterly silent. For the first time, she stretched out her six delicate, feathery arms and felt... weightless. She was a tiny frozen star, beginning her very first journey. A soft little breeze, a puff of air no bigger than a sigh, came whispering by. "Hello, little one," it hummed. "First time down?" Crystal just shimmered in the moonlight, which the breeze took for a yes. "Let's dance, then." The breeze gently took hold of one of her sparkling points and began to guide her.
They waltzed and they twirled, a slow, graceful dance through the darkness. Crystal looked down. She saw the tops of tall pine trees, their branches already heavy with snow. They looked like they were wearing white winter coats. The breeze carried her over sleeping rooftops and quiet streets, where the only lights were the tall, lonely streetlamps casting pools of gold onto the white ground. She met other snowflakes on the way. Thousands of them.
Each one was a perfect, six-sided cousin, and together they formed a silent, shimmering river, flowing from the sky to the earth. The moonbeams made them all sparkle and glow. It was the most BEAUTIFUL parade she could ever imagine. Then, as she drifted over one particular house, she saw it. A soft, warm, yellow glow, shining from a small square window. It wasn't bright like the moon. It was... cozy. It felt like a quiet invitation. The light seemed to call to her, promising a place to rest after her long, wonderful dance.
The breeze seemed to understand. It gave her one last, gentle spin, a little push toward the light. "Go on," it whispered. "Your journey is almost done." Crystal floated the last little bit by herself. With a final, delicate twirl, she landed. Tick. The sound was so quiet, only she could hear it. She had landed on the cold, smooth glass of the windowpane. Through the glass, she saw a little bed, and tucked inside, a child was dreaming peacefully. Crystal looked to her left and right.
Her cousins, the other snowflakes, were landing all around her. Together, they began to create a beautiful, lacy picture of frost on the glass. She wasn't alone anymore. She was home. And all night long, she watched over the sleeping child, a tiny, perfect star of ice, guarding sweet dreams until the morning sun.
