A seed from a date palm, two thousand years old, once sprouted and grew into a tree. Just last night, we followed Crystal the snowflake on her journey to the ground. Tonight’s story is about another tiny traveler, searching for its own special place to land. Our story is about Pip. Pip was a seed, no bigger than a freckle on your nose. It was smooth and brown and held a big secret deep inside. For many days, Pip clung to its mother plant, swaying gently in the sunshine.
It listened to the happy buzzing of the bees. It felt the warm air on its tiny shell. Pip was safe. It was happy. But it knew, deep down, that a great adventure was waiting. One afternoon, a new sound began. A shushing whisper. It was the wind, coming to play. The wind danced through the meadow, making the tall grasses bow. It rustled the leaves in the trees, telling them stories of faraway places. Then, with a gentle puff, the wind lifted Pip right off its branch.
Oh, what a feeling! Pip was flying. It tumbled and twirled, higher and higher. The world below became a beautiful blanket of green and gold. Pip floated over a sparkling stream and past a field of sleepy cows. The wind was a soft cradle, carrying Pip along on its journey. It wasn't scary at ALL… it was WONDERFUL. Pip felt so very brave. As the sun began to set, painting the sky in soft pink and orange, the wind grew tired. It began to slow down, singing a softer and softer song.
Gently, oh so gently, it lowered Pip down… down… down. Pip landed with a tiny thump in a patch of soft, dark earth. It was nestled right beside a smooth, grey stone and under the shelter of a big, friendly leaf. The journey was over. Pip snuggled into the soil. It was so cozy and warm. A little beetle wiggled by and tipped its antennae, as if to say hello. The last light of the sun faded away, and the moon began to glow. Pip could hear the quiet chirp of crickets and the soft rustle of leaves settling in for the night.
It was perfectly still. It was perfectly peaceful. Tucked into its dark, quiet bed, Pip began to dream. It dreamed of the sun. It dreamed of the rain. And it dreamed of the great, green, wonderful thing it would one day become. And there, in the quiet earth, Pip slept, waiting for the morning.
