In the quietest part of the night, when the world is holding its breath, a brand new breeze was born. It was the same sort of quiet that let our little friend Milo the mushroom finally see the moonbeams dancing in his forest. This new breeze, so small you wouldn't even feel it on your cheek, was named Zephyr. Zephyr’s first moment was just a tiny wiggle. A shiver on the tip of a long, green blade of grass.

It didn't know it was a breeze yet. It only knew it felt… light. So it let go. It lifted, tumbling over itself in a soft, clumsy swirl. Below, the world was a patchwork of dark, sleeping shapes. It smelled of damp earth and cool stone. Oh, it was a wonderful smell. Zephyr drifted. It found a fern, its leaves like a delicate green ladder. Zephyr danced down each step, making the fern fronds bob and sway ever so gently.

It learned it could whisper. A tiny, rustling sound that was ALMOST silent. It floated over to a patch of poppies, their petals all closed up for the night. Zephyr gave one a little tickle, a gentle nudge, just to say hello. The poppy trembled, but it didn't wake. Everything was so peaceful… so still. The little breeze grew a bit bolder. It followed the sound of a soft gurgle and found a stream. The water was like black glass, and caught in it were… stars.

Ohhh, a thousand tiny, shattered pieces of the moon, all floating right there. Zephyr dipped down low, just to feel the coolness. It skimmed the surface, making the tiniest ripples, watching the captured stars dance and shimmer. It felt like it was painting with water and light. This, Zephyr decided, was the most beautiful thing in the whole, wide, quiet world. But all that exploring, all that wonder… it can make a tiny breeze very sleepy.

Zephyr felt itself slowing down. Its playful swirls became long, gentle sighs. It drifted away from the stream, back toward the sleeping flowers. It found a tall, purple flower shaped like a bell. A Canterbury bell. It looked so cozy. Zephyr floated right inside. It was perfect. The petals were a soft blanket, shielding it from the great big sky. Curled up in the heart of the flower, Zephyr finally came to rest.

It wasn't gone… not really. It just became part of the stillness. Part of the gentle, dreaming breath of the garden, waiting for the sun to wake it all up again.
