On a patch of moss no bigger than your hand, a tiny mushroom named Milo opened his eyes for the very first time. The moon was high and full, the same one that Glimmer the dewdrop once held like a silver coin, and it spilled its gentle light all over the forest floor. All around Milo, the other little mushrooms were sound asleep, their caps tilted down like tiny, dreaming heads. But Milo… Milo was awake. Everything was so new. He could smell the rich, dark earth beneath him and the sweet scent of pine needles that had fallen nearby.
A single drop of dew trickled down the side of his smooth, brown cap, and it felt cool and wonderful. The world seemed… HUGE. And very, very quiet. But then, he saw it. A tiny flicker of light, just past the edge of a sleeping fern. Then another. And another. They danced in the air, like little stars that had forgotten their way back to the sky. Milo had never seen anything so beautiful. He was only a tiny mushroom, rooted to his spot, but his heart was full of a big, gentle curiosity. What were those lights?
He watched, completely still, as one of the lights drifted closer. It circled his little patch of moss once… twice… and then, oh so softly, it landed right on top of his cap. Ohhh. The world around him was suddenly bathed in a warm, golden glow. The firefly’s light wasn’t bright or scary—it was a soft, friendly pulse. And in its light, Milo saw everything. He saw the intricate patterns on the bark of the great oak tree he lived under. He saw a sleepy ladybug tucked into the fold of a leaf. He even saw a tiny snail, its shell swirling like a galaxy, making its slow and steady way across a twig.
The night wasn't empty at all. It was FULL of quiet, gentle life. The firefly stayed for a long, lovely moment, its light a silent friend. Then, it lifted off and rejoined the others, their dance a soft goodbye. Milo watched them go, their lights winking out one by one as the first hint of morning painted the sky a soft, sleepy blue. He wasn't afraid of the quiet anymore. He felt… cozy. Safe. He was part of this big, beautiful, whispering world. And as the sun began to warm the forest floor, the little mushroom tucked his chin, closed his eyes, and drifted into his VERY first dream… a dream of dancing golden lights.
